Great nonfiction for children means bringing a subject to life for your reader, whether you are writing a true story, recreating the past, inspiring a future Nobel prize winner or exploring how to juggle, bake or gaze at the stars.  In the first part of this workshop, Judith will help you refine your idea to ensure that it meets the needs of your young audience.
The afternoon workshop will focus on structuring and expressing your idea in the form of a book proposal – one that highlights your angle, defines your book’s scope and readership, and demonstrates that you understand the requirements of this exacting market.  Do bring an idea or subject/theme that you would like to bring to life for children of any age.

Judith Heneghan is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing and programme leader for the MA Writing for Children at the University of Winchester.   She began her career as a commissioning editor of adult nonfiction titles with Hodder, but moved into writing and published her first children’s novel, Stonecipher, in 2005.   Since then she has written over 50 titles for the children’s educational market, on subjects ranging from pets, sports and hobbies to grittier topics such as terrorism and the power of the media.  In 2013 she received the School Libraries Association Children’s Choice award for Love Your Hamster.   Judith is also Director of the annual Winchester Writers’ Festival www.writersfestival.co.uk.
