Abbot Street - Dunfermline, Fife KY12 7NW

Are you a picture book writer or illustrator? Do you wonder about your words or ponder over your pictures – creating picture books involves both worlds – so how do you combine the skills needed to achieve your goal?

We are delighted to welcome award-winning illustrator and fellow SCBWI member Dave Gray to our network for an event that will encourage and inspire writers and illustrators to step out of their comfort zones. Come along and draw when you normally write, and write when you normally draw.

In this hands-on three hour session Dave will provide an insight into the thought processes behind illustrating picture books from both the technical and creative sides covering everything from placing text, page turns and choosing key moments to illustrate, through to generating ideas, world building and creative decision making. There will also be plenty of fun, quick-fire activities plus hints and practical tips for writers and illustrators to help you complete your masterpiece!

This exciting event will take place in the grand surroundings of the Queen Margaret Room within the newly-refurbished Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries in Fife.

Transport information: the venue is easily reached by train to Dunfermline Town Station with regular trains from Edinburgh Waverly and Haymarket, and by frequent buses from the Central Belt.

Dave Gray is an award winning illustrator based in the Midlands whose varied career has involved design, illustration and animation work for the BBC, Channel 4, CITV, BMW MINI, as well as 10 years creating media projects with disadvantaged and hard to reach groups of teenagers and adults.

In 2014 Dave won the SCBWI Undiscovered Voices Award for children’s illustration and went on to illustrate The

Unstoppable Maggie McGee, a children’s book set in Birmingham Children’s Hospital which launched in Selfridges, was featured in The Big Read and BBC Awesome Authors 2017 and has raised over £45,000 for the hospital’s Magnolia House Appeal. Dave also recently illustrated Save Our Stories by Perrier Award nominee Nick Walker and Benny’s Hat, a children’s picture book which tackles the difficult subject of a child’s death in a sensitive and thought provoking way. The book launched in Foyle’s to critical acclaim and is featured in the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy December 2017 Journal.

For those interested and if the weather is kind to us, we will be having lunch in Pittencrieff Park after the event. Please bring a packed lunch, or there are several catering options in the surrounding area.
