PICTURE BOOKS: FROM CONCEPT TO CREATION, WITH FLORIS BOOKS.

SCBWI Scotland is thrilled to be holding this picture book event where we will delve into the process of bringing our ideas to life. We will be joined by Leah McDowell, Art & Production Director at Floris Books. Leah will take us behind the scenes of the creation of The Treasure of the Loch Ness Monster (written by Lari Don and illustrated by Nataša Ilinčić) to reveal how a manuscript becomes a finished picture book. Covering everything from illustration briefs and character development to storyboarding and the roughs process, Leah will also have plenty of tips for aspiring picture book writers and illustrators. Come along for a fascinating look at publisher/illustrator collaborative picture book making that’s ideal for both authors and illustrators alike.

Leah is also offering a limited number of 15 minute illustration portfolio reviews. These cost only £15 and will take place after the main event, from 4pm onwards.  There is no need to send your portfolio beforehand; Leah will be doing ‘lightening’ on-the-spot reviews on the day. You will need to bring a tailored portfolio containing your best work — maybe 5 or 6 spreads (spreads could contain anything from concept/character sketches to final artwork) that you’d like feedback on.

If you would like to take up this opportunity, please select the “SCBWI member ticket plus portfolio review” option when booking.

PLEASE NOTE, THE PORTFOLIO REVIEW IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO SCBWI MEMBERS.

Leah McDowell is an experienced book designer and art director, former Co-Chair of the Society of Young Publishers Scotland, nominee for the 2019 London Book Fair Trailblazer’s Awards and winner of the inaugural Satire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year award.
Having studied Illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, followed by Publishing at Edinburgh Napier, she now works as the Art & Production Director in Floris Books, an independent publisher of award-winning Scottish children’s books. She founded Floris’s Kelpies Illustration Prize in 2014 as she is passionate about opening up the publishing industry to aspiring designers and illustrators and nurturing talent.
