Portfolio Breakouts is an opportunity to show your portfolio to an agent or art director screen to screen! And we’re doing it again for 2020!

How does it work?

The Portfolio Breakouts will run Saturdays from 14:00 – 17:00 with an an art director looking at your portfolios. Bookings are for 20 minutes with one reviewer of your choice on Zoom. Your booking slot and Zoom link will be sent to you on the Wednesday before the event date. This time we will run one Saturday to round off 2020 with three reviewers and 18 openings (6 individual portfolios for each art director). We are very excited to have Libby Hamilton. art director from Andersen Press, Sharon King-Chai, art director from Macmillan Press and Paul Coombs from Wonderbly Publishing.

The Saturdays will break down like this:

Libby Hamilton is editorial director of picture books at Andersen Press. She has worked in publishing for almost 20 years, and has been fortunate enough to edit some incredible authors and illustrators including Jonny Duddle, Levi Pinfold, Jeanne Willis, Tony Ross, David McKee, Michael Morpurgo, Michael Foreman and Joseph Coelho. Books that she has collaborated on as editor have won the Kate Greenaway Medal (twice) and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, among other awards.





Sharon King-Chai is Senior Commissioning Designer for Two Hoots Books, Macmillan, and award winning illustrator. Born in Australia, she moved to London in 2003 after completing an Honours degree in Visual Communication at University of Technology Sydney, and has since been based in London. Sharon has extensive experience in music and publishing industries and has worked on a wide range of projects including album artwork, branding and logos, product packaging, book covers and event identities, with an expertise in picture books.



Paul Coomey, Art Director at Wonderbly Story Studio, and past Art Director of Stripes Publishing under the Little Tiger umbrella, loves his job creating books that inspire boundless self belief in readers. Paul is also the author illustrator of Stick Boy, publishing date in January 2021. He has participated in past SCBWI illustrator focused events and with the AOI and university children’s illustration programmes.
Paul has worked as a Designer and Art Director on Children’s books for ten years. Before that he worked in universities, theatres, graveyards, and nightclubs around the world. His passion is storytelling and in working with authors and illustrators to spark a lifelong love of books in readers of all ages.

The Process

Illustrators will need to prepare a portfolio as a multi-page pdf document or prepare a folder with jpgs numbered in the sequence you want them to be seen in. Make sure that your pdf document has your name, website and contact details, and if showing jpgs, make sure to name each (01,02.03 etc)-(title)-(first initial-surname). To make the most of your time with the reviewer of your choice be sure to have your portfolio ready on your desktop to point to when you go into, share screen. You can also pass documents through the same portal, so perhaps have a digital postcard with your details to share with your reviewer ready.
