Europe in a Tree ©Bridget Marzo, gouache on tinted paper in Drawing Europe Together, Forty-five Illustrators, One Europe published by Macmillan November 2018

Whether as a illustrator, you have just one tiny idea, a drawer of half-baked projects, or shelves of published books, this afternoon Masterclass aims to offer you the chance to play with writing ‘out of the book’ if not out of the box. It hopes to give you a break from finessing your drawing obsessions and explore the wider terrain of visual and narrative – maybe even poetic – sequence with you, using the advantages of limited time and a shared space far from familiar surroundings.

While Bridget can’t promise you’ll have something ready to serve up to a publisher,
she can promise that by sharing tips gleaned from her own experience, you will:

• dig up out of your own head and stir some core ingredients that are essential for a sequential illustrated project aimed at children

• pour the ingredients out into a flexible sequence using some tried and tested techniques

• cook up (if not fully bake) something you can sample with others on the day

• and finally return happily to the isolation of your own space with something you’d like to  continue to play with and work up into a sequential project that who knows, you may one day serve up to a wider readership.

Bridget Marzo (formerly Bridget Strevens Marzo) is the award-wining artist and author of over 20 picture & novelty books, published internationally. Now based in East London after decades in France working mostly for French and US publishers, Bridget has a particular interest in mixing cultures and visual literacy. Alongside writing and illustrating, Bridget was involved in early interactive media in the 1990s. She was a graphic games designer and briefly an AD for Bayard Presse and for many years taught Foundation, Graphic Novel and Picture Book classes at Parsons School of Design, Paris and colour mixing classes at the American University in Paris. She was the first SCBWI International Illustrator Coordinator and continues to mentor, give talks to Illustration students and run creative events for children as well as adults across Europe. Her latest UK and US published picture book, Tiz and Ott’s Big Draw is all about two characters who in different ways, draw and paint their way into – and out of – a hole.
