Building Worlds for Your Character with Pam Smy

The environment that illustrated characters inhabit is often overlooked, and yet where a story takes place not only adds a sense
of place, but can help define the identity of our protagonist, and can be a character in it's own right. This is a talk and workshop
on building worlds for our visual stories, focusing on early developmental work, sketches, plans, and research.

Pam Smy is an author illustrator and art educator who fell in love with drawing at the age of 19. That was a while ago. Since then hardly a day has gone by without drawing something she has seen or imagined. Drawing has given Pam the ability to capture stories and characters she sees all around her. Illustrating gives her the opportunity to translate teveryday observations into recreating imagined worlds for authors.

Pam combines her lecturing with ongoing illustration for children, specializing in illustration for chapter books and novels for older children. Her work has been published by a range of UK publishers, including The Folio Society, Walker Books, Random House Children’s Books and David Fickling Books. She teaches on the Cambridge MA for Children's Illustration.
