Speakers’ Biographies

Kathryn Evans

Described by Book Trust Scotland as the Poster Girl for Tenacity, Kathryn Evans took a long time to get her first publishing deal. Her agent, Sophie Hicks, kept her sane and motivated for a good chunk of that time.  Kathryn’s debut, More of Me, was published by Usborne in 2016 – it was nominated for the Carnegie medal, won the Edinburgh International Book Festival First Book Award and the SCBWI Crystal Kite for UK and Ireland. More of Me has been shortlisted for multiple awards and has sold rights around the world. Kathryn is a popular speaker in schools, runs a farming business, fences competitively and belly dances for fun. In her spare time she’s Co-Regional Advisor responsible for finance for SCBWI British Isles.

Sue Wallman

Sue Wallman is a former journalist who now works in a secondary school library. In 2013 she won the Woman’s Prize for Fiction First Chapter Award. Her debut YA thriller, Lying About Last Summer, was published by Scholastic UK in 2016 and was selected for the WHSmith/Zoella Book Club. Her second, See How They Lie, was published in 2017, and was a Tesco book of the month. Your Turn to Die will be published in May.

Becky Bagnell

Becky Bagnell is the founder and director of the Lindsay Literary Agency whose award-winning authors have been translated into multiple languages around the world. Previously Becky worked as an editor at Macmillan Books where, amongst other titles, she commissioned the first book by adventurer Bear Grylls. Authors include: Pamela Butchart, Sue Wallman, Sam Gayton and Ruth Hatfield.

Sophie Hicks
Sophie Hicks started her own agency in 2014 after 25 years at Ed Victor Ltd where she worked first in foreign rights before starting her list and becoming Managing Director in 1999. Her authors have been New York Times and Sunday Times bestsellers on both the adult and children’s lists, have been shortlisted for or won many prizes including the Costa Book Award, Carnegie Medal, Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, Waterstone’s Children’s Book of the Year, British Book Award and Irish Book Award, have been selected for the Richard and Judy Book Club, and have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.
