11th October 2014

This session will look at the best picture books and consider why they work as well as they do. You’ll work with author Pippa Goodheart on a new story and text and there will also be an opportunity to workshop your own stories and texts. Please bring with you a picture book text you would like to have critiqued, or a picture book idea which you would like to discuss. Don’t worry if you are a complete beginner! If everyone brought perfect finished texts we would have little to work on, and little would be learned. So, even if you haven’t tried writing a picture book before, still bring along some thoughts about the book you might like to write, and you can benefit from the class’s ideas and suggestions about it.

Pippa Goodhart is the prize-winning author of over ninety books for children. Her picture book You Choose won Mumsnet's Book of the Year for 3 & 4 Year Olds as well as York Libraries' Best Picture Book Of All Time. Her books range through board books, picture books, to early readers and children's novels. Under the name Laura Owen she writes the Winnie the Witch storybooks. Historical novel Finding Fortune, set in the Klondike Goldrush, has just been published. Pippa teaches writing for children at De Montfort University and critiques picture book texts for the Writers' Workshop agency.

Timings of the Day: 12:00pm start with break for lunch from 1pm until 1:30pm. Class resumes until 3:30pm. Possible Q and A until 4pm.

Cost: £30 per class for SCBWI members, £37 for non members, £105 special SCBWI member discount when you book for 4 classes. (All prices include a pre-ordered light lunch and a beverage.)
