Fantasy Writing for Young Readers with Robert Paul Weston

17th May, 2014

There are few things as limitless as a child's imagination and few things that spark it to flights of fancy as a beloved fantasy novel. From the magic realism of David Almond and Rebecca Stead, to the high fantasy of Cornelia Funke and Phillip Reeve, these books are timeless favourites for countless young readers. In this workshop, you’ll learn the techniques that make writing fantasy for youth challenging as well as rewarding. World-building, premises, characterisation, and the discrete aspects of craft that apply to the genre will all be covered. Insightful but fun writing exercises will give you hands-on experience in these areas. Please bring an example of a fantasy novel (preferably, but not necessarily, for youth) that you admire, along with 1-3 typed, double-spaced pages of a manuscript or outline.

Robert Paul Weston is the author of the award-winning fantasy novel-in-verse, Zorgamazoo, winner of the California Young Reader Medal; the hardboiled fairy tale, Dust City, shortlisted for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Mystery; and Prince Puggly of Spud and the Kingdom of Spiff. In November 2013 he will publish the first in The Creature Department series, a transmedia novel collaboration with the London visual effects firm, Framestore (Harry Potter, Where the Wild Things Are, Avatar). He holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of British Columbia and lives in London.
