CONFERENCE 2022

FINDING YOUR POWER

The SCBWI British Isles Conference has returned!

Join us in Manchester on the 19th and 20th November.

The SCBWI”

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators British Isles (SCBWI) is delighted to bring our annual SCBWI conference to Manchester.

The pandemic has changed much for many people, but one consistent request from children’s book creators is an opportunity to meet again face-to-face. The 2022 conference theme ‘Finding Your Power’ reflects this desire to regroup and recharge, and we hope delegates will leave empowered with a new sense of optimism and community. Look out for further details of our six full scholarships which will be awarded to authors and illustrators from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

Click here below to explore the rich and varied programme, highlights of which include keynote lectures by multi award-winning author Alex Wheatle, MBE, and Jim Field, award-winning illustrator, character designer and animation director. Our industry keynote slot this year, Beyond the Secret Garden, will consist of a panel discussion featuring British Academy Global Professor of Children’s Literature Karen Sands O’Connor, and lecturer and Philosophy for Children Practitioner Darren Chetty.

Throughout the weekend there will be practical sessions and workshops catering to all stages of the creative journey, including pre-published, self-published and established writers or illustrators. In addition, delegates have the opportunity to book one-to-one manuscript and portfolio review sessions with literary agents, editors and publishers. Saturday will culminate with a fantastic opportunity for delegates to pitch to industry professionals in a Dragons’ Den style event, then dinner with the SCBWI British Isles annual Mass Book Launch celebration: come in fancy dress or not – you choose. Theme will be Manchester through the Ages.

The conference is aimed at all stages of a creative career, from newbies to the experienced, be you writer or illustrator. We promise the atmosphere will be stimulating, educational, yet relaxed.

Why not arrive early and join our Friday Fringe – there will be a range of activities and socials which will help you settle into the conference and provide an opportunity to meet up with friends old and new.

Be prepared to have fun, laugh, learn and come away refreshed, inspired and equipped to master your work. We look forward to seeing you there…!

Bookings run from 15th August until 2330 01st November 2022
