FOR ILLUSTRATORS

Book Now. SCBWI BI Annual Conference 2016.

The SCBWI British Isles Annual Conference is a fantastic opportunity for illustrators. Come and be inspired and stimulated by meeting with other illustrators at varying stages of their careers, and take the opportunity to hear from and talk to some of the very best professionals working in Children’s Publishing today.

We have a particularly exciting industry representation this year!

Louise Bolongaro – Publisher and Head of Picture Books at Nosy Crow

David McDougall – Senior Art Director of Fiction at Walker Books

Caroline Walsh – Agent with David Higham Associates, (whose clients include Lauren Child, Jacqueline Wilson and Cressida Cowell)

Polly Whybrow – Editor for Illustrated Publishing at Bloomsbury

They’ll all be appearing in the Picture Book and Illustrated Fiction Industry Panel on Saturday morning, and conducting 1-2-1s throughout the day, plus there’ll be lots more agents and editors participating in the Conference as well.

Other Illustrator highlights include:

  • Sketching and Scrawling around Winchester with Paul Morton and Lorraine Cooke on Friday afternoon – the perfect way to loosen up for the Conference!
  • The Friday Night Critique – another great ice-breaker, and a chance to get feedback on your Picture Book manuscript, dummy or artwork, in small, friendly groups.
  • Leigh Hodgkinson - Illustrator Keynote
Leigh Hodgkinson, brilliant author/illustrator, maker and animator (she has a new animated series in production right now!) will be giving the Illustrator Keynote speech, on Saturday at 1.20pm.
  • Leigh’s post-speech Q&A will be a chance to ask her questions directly.
  • Portfolio 1-1s.
121s - Portfolio reveiews - Photo: Paul Morton
  • Picture Book Manuscript 1-1s.
  • Competition for best Portfolio.
  • Competition to re-imagine a famous author’s best loved characters.
(We’ll let you know the author closer to the date).
  • Say it Loud and Proud Wall of Publicity.
  • The chance to participate in The Hook. (A bit like the Voice, a bit like Dragon’s Den, this quick pitch event is open to author/illustrators as well!)
  • Viv Schwarz’s Picture Book Intensive aimed at developing ways of tapping into your imagination using techniques such as improvisation, to create surprising stories and characters.
  • Author/Illustrator Paul Stickland’s unmissable class on self-promotion, including loads of ideas for author/illustrator events, school visits, using social media to your advantage and maximising your income using print-on-demand and art online stores.
  • Writing for Children’s TV with Roland Moore.

And you really mustn’t forget the Saturday Night Mass Book Launch Party attended by many of the industry professionals!

If you haven’t been before, we really hope you’ll give the Conference a go. You’ll learn a huge amount and be guaranteed a very warm welcome into the wonderfully supportive organization that is the SCBWI British Isles. We look forward to welcoming YOU!
